About 27 miles out from downtown Honolulu is the North Shore of O‘ahu, where people travel from all over the world to visit the renowned beaches and iconic surf spots. Experienced surfers will relish the thrill of the winter waves, which can be as big as 30 feet, though it is in the summer months, when casual beachgoers can enjoy the area’s tranquil waters best.
Waimea Bay
Waimea Bay is among the most popular surf spots of the North Shore thanks to its seasonal big waves and long surfing history. During summer months, Waimea’s broad stretch of beach provides the perfect site to sunbathe and enjoy Hawai‘i’s temperate waters.
Jumping from Waimea Rock
While there are signs posted and it is ill advised to jump from the rocks around the beach, people can’t seem to resist taking the plunge.
Underwater Training
When the waters are calm, swimmers and surfers can sometimes be seen breath-hold training. Large rocks weigh the swimmer at the ocean floor, while a safety partner remains in tow to protect against diver blackout, which can result if drowning if the breath is held for too long.
Pua‘ena Point
Pua‘ena Point’s gentle waters make a good starting point for beginning surfers. The beach itself is a nice picnic spot, too, and nearby is Police Beach where Lost was filmed.

Sharks Cove
Don’t let its name fool you: Sharks Cove is one of Hawai‘i’s best snorkeling and diving spots, and sharks are no more common here than in other beaches around the island. Home to a myriad of marine life, the cove offers an underwater look into the coral reef and lava rock formations where reef fish and sea turtles frequent.
Tip:
Bring a pair of reef-walking shoes, as the coral rocks surrounding the cove can be sharp.
